Testimonials...

This young mum attended The Haven a few years ago. It really sums up our aim of helping vulnerable families to a brighter future.

As a result of being forced into prostitution at a young age, one of our mums had not attended school on a regular basis and could not read or write. A retired teacher who visited The Haven offered to teach her basic literacy and numeracy. Initially the mum was very wary but as the classes were to take place in the familiar and secure surroundings of The Haven she was happy for the classes to go ahead. A member of staff met the mum in town in January proudly clutching the bag of books she had bought to read to her son. The Haven's intervention changed not only her life but that of her son - he now has a mum who can help him with his homework.

Letter written by a Client of The Family Haven who nominated The Family Haven charity for a Community Award.

I would like to nominate The Family Haven charity for a community Award.

I was living in a refuge with my two young children until recently. I heard about the Family Haven through the refuge staff. I came along on my own with my 2 yr old and 11 month old.

I was distraught when I arrived at the Family Haven; I had no self - confidence and felt I could burst into tears at any moment. Little things can make a huge difference; I had a break from my children and the chance to meet other parents. The staffs were on hand to help with problems such as form filling and listening to my problems. Just being able to use the office phone to make sensitive calls, instead of using a public phone box with my children in tow made a huge difference.

I've recently moved into an unfurnished house and the staffs have helped me with basic items such as furniture and clothes as I was sleeping on the floor. Since I've moved being able to use the laundry at the haven has been vital having 2 young children. We all have a hot meal every day and the children have a pre - school education in the nursery. We even get to go on trips to farm parks and Weston.

I am now getting my life back on track although sometimes still feel a little vulnerable. However my confidence has increased, life is better with my 2 children. I am a better mother as I'm no longer on edge and am calmer.

I am a different person to the one who arrived at The Family Haven a year ago. And I actually like myself for the first time.

The charity has done so much to make my life and my children's lives better. They care so much and I know they work really hard fundraising, as they need funds to help more people like me.
